Of Stillness and Storm

“I felt torn between two worlds. Each with its own mystery. One more captivating than the other, but the other more real and breathing.”It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream—reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family’s undoing.

At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren’s past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It’s thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.

Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.
MY THOUGHTS:

The synopsis first intrigued me when I decided to request a copy of this book for my blog. The more I read, the more I couldn’t stop reading. There’s just something about the unraveling of lives in fiction that captures our attention and holds it. As I learned more about the characters and began to see the story unfold, it saddened me. It reminded me of people I know and stories I’ve heard. There was a realness and a rawness to this story. It was easy to see the red flags and mistakes Lauren was making as she stumbled off the right path and it reminded me of how hard it is to see those flags in my own life. This book would make a great book club selection. It will have you thinking about the characters long after the story has ended.

MY REVIEW:

I absolutely love this sweet romance from Carol Ross! She has done a fabulous job crafting characters who are unforgettable…they will stay with you long after you have turned the final page. This “knight” and his “mermaid” have a chemistry that simply works and will keep readers engrossed in their love story until the end. Elements of suspense add an intriguing aspect to this story as well. If you are looking for a Christmas love story with an edge…don’t miss Christmas In The Cove.

Carol Ross lives with her husband and one loveable miscreant of a dachshund in a small town in Washington close to both the ocean and the mountains. She adores the Pacific Northwest because it provides her with endless opportunities for the activities she loves—hiking, running, skiing, and spending time outdoors. Although she enjoys reading in many genres, she writes what she loves the most—romance, especially light-hearted stories about the fun, flirty, and often-tumultuous path toward a happily ever after.

Trust My Heart & Giveaway!

Grant McAllister arrives in Murphy, North Carolina, with one aim: to sell his inherited property and leave as quickly as possible.
The big-city lawyer has no interest in his late, estranged grandparents or the dilapidated mansion he just acquired. After his high-profile divorce, he should be avoiding perky reporters, too. But Jami Carlisle is honest, funny, and undeniably appealing.

After breaking up with her safe-but-smothering boyfriend, Jami is determined to ace her first big assignment. A story about the McAllister estate is too intriguing to ignore—much like its handsome, commitment-phobic heir. Thanks to her digging, the pieces of Grant’s fraught family history are gradually fitting into place, but also upending all his old beliefs.

The two draw closer as they share their dreams, until misread signals and misunderstandings begin to test their trust. But in the unspoiled beauty of the Smoky Mountains, there’s healing and forgiveness to be found. And for Grant, this unplanned detour may be just what’s needed to finally guide him home…

From medical secretary to court reporter to property manager to owner of a special-events decorating company, Carol J. Post’s résumé reads as if she hasn’t yet decided what she wants to be when she grows up. But one thing that has remained constant through the years is her love of writing. She started as a child composing poetry for family and friends, then graduated to articles for religious and children’s publications. Now she pens fun, fast-paced inspirational romance and romantic suspense stories. Her books have been nominated for an RT Reviewers’ Choice Best Book award and selected as an RT Top Pick. When Carol isn’t writing, she enjoys sailing, hiking, camping—almost anything outdoors. She also plays the piano and sings with her music-minister husband. MY THOUGHTS:

I love this story! I love the characters and the message of forgiveness and faith woven beautifully throughout. This story also has secrets which threaten to destroy lives, but also a message of hope. Jami has been through so much and has set her dreams aside, but believes a new opportunity will bring what she has been longing for. Grant is the perfect balance, but he is dealing with his own issues…I love these characters! This story will touch your heart and make you think about the things that are truly important in life. When Death Draws Near

Death has always been part of Gwen Marcey’s job. But when faced with her own mortality, everything takes on a different hue.

Forensic artist Gwen Marcey is between jobs and homes when she accepts temporary work in Pikeville, Kentucky. The Eastern Kentucky town, located deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, has been plagued by a serial rapist and a series of unexplained deaths. Before Gwen can develop a composite drawing, the latest witness vanishes, just like all the previous victims.

Turning her attention to sketching the face of an unidentified body, she discovers a link between his death and a Pentecostal serpent-handling church. Serpent-handling is illegal in Kentucky, and the churches have gone underground to avoid the authorities and continue to worship as they believe. Gwen is offered a handsome reward to infiltrate the renegade members, a reward she desperately needs as it seems her breast cancer has returned.

Joined by her digitally-obsessed, Generation Z daughter, Gwen goes undercover to a nineteenth century revival, planning to draw the faces of the snake handlers so they can be identified and arrested. Instead she uncovers a murderous plot and a festering evil.

MY REVIEW:

I was really excited to be able to request a copy of this book to review here at JoJo’s Corner! Though this is the second book in the series, it can be totally enjoyed as a stand-alone…and enjoy it you will! I just adore stories of identity and secrets and mystery and this one definitely brings these themes into play. From page one I was sucked into the story and time period, getting to know the characters one by one and loving every minute of it. The authors ability to paint worlds in vivid pictures to play out in the readers mind is amazing! These characters and setting seemed as real to me as yesterday. If you enjoy historical fiction, you wont want to miss this one! I loved Phoebe and Ian so much and I think you will too!

Talk about a book drawing me in! I was enchanted by LilyRose from the beginning and very much wanted to know how her story unfolds. My Father’s House is at once a sweet romance and a page-turning thriller. Kudos to debut novelist Rose Chandler Johnson for a job well done!”
—Ann Tatlock, award-winning novelist, Christy award winner and author of Sweet Mercy
“Fast-paced and entertaining, Rose Johnson crafts a debut novel that is sure to delight readers.”
—Alice J. Wisler, award-winning author of Rain Song and How Sweet It Is
“Rose Chandler Johnson has written a story that tugs at your memories and your heart.  Even when loving the wrong man creates devastating hurt and pain, she shows you can turn back and God will lead you through the darkness into the light. Take the mistakes, bring good out of bad and lead us back where we belong with those who love us, pour joy into our hearts and give us a new beginning.”
—Susan Reichert, Editor-in-Chief, Southern Writers Magazine

MY THOUGHTS:

Lily Rose had an idealic childhood, met the man of her dreams and after a fairy-tale proposal her life seemed to be heading toward happily ever after- until it wasn’t.

Rose Chandler Johnson’s debut fiction novel is full of southern charm and flair, but this is not a fluffy, funny read. As the main character’s marriage begins to unravel, the novel delves into some darker issues. Chandler weaves a story of love, loss and discovery. Themes of faith run strong throughout the novel as the main character makes her journey back to the small town where she grew up and the God she thought had long abandon her.

This book does contain some mild language and for that I’m giving it 4.5 tall glasses of iced sweet tea out of 5.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Rose Chandler Johnson

Rose Chandler Johnson is the author of the award winning devotional “God, Me, and Sweet Iced Tea: Experiencing God in the Midst of Everyday Moments.” “My Father’s House” is her first novel. She happily makes her home near Augusta, Georgia.
