Book Review: The Delusion

978-1-4964-2236-1

By March of Owen Edmonds’s senior year, eleven students at Masonville High School have committed suicide. Amid the media frenzy and chaos, Owen tries to remain levelheaded—until he endures his own near-death experience and wakes to a distressing new reality.

The people around him suddenly appear to be shackled and enslaved.

Owen frantically seeks a cure for what he thinks are crazed hallucinations, but his delusions become even more sinister. An army of hideous, towering beings, unseen by anyone but Owen, are preying on his girlfriend and classmates, provoking them to self-destruction.

Owen eventually arrives at a mind-bending conclusion: he’s not imagining the evil—everyone else is blind to its reality. He must warn and rescue those he loves . . . but this proves to be no simple mission. Will he be able to convince anyone to believe him before it’s too late?

Owen’s heart-pounding journey through truth and delusion will force him to reconsider everything he believes. He both longs for and fears the answers to questions that are quickly becoming too dangerous to ignore.

My Review

I love a good suspense novel and The Delusion does not disappoint. From the moment the story began, I was sucked in and could not put it down until I had finished it. The author does a fabulous job of keeping readers on the edge of their seat. I think what made this story most interesting was the feel of reality despite the fact that this is a fiction read. What would you do if you knew the truth, but no one would believe you? Our main character must reach his own conclusion to the answer to this question. I encourage you to read it and enjoy its finale for yourself.

Her Secret by Shelley Shepard Gray

A suspenseful tale of a young Amish woman who is forced to move to a new town to escape a threatening stalker

After a stalker went too far, Hannah Hilty and her family had no choice but to leave the bustling Amish community where she grew up. She wonders if she’ll ever return to the trusting, easy-going woman she once was.

For Isaac Troyer, the beautiful girl he teasingly called “The Recluse” confuses him like no other. When he learns of her past, he knows he’s misjudged her. However, he also understands the importance of being grateful for God’s gifts, and wonders if they will ever have anything in common. But as Hannah and Isaac slowly grow closer, they realize that there’s always more to someone than meets the eye.

Just as Hannah is finally settling into her new life, and perhaps finding a new love, more secrets are revealed and tragedy strikes. Now Hannah must decide if she should run again or dare to fight for the future she has found in Hart County.

MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely LOVE Shelley’s books!! If she writes it, I will likely love it as I have yet to read anything of hers that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. She has a special way of totally immersing readers into the world of the Amish, endearing characters to the reader and just making readers feel as if they are a part of this world and these characters. Whether it’s a sweet romance with hints of drama or a suspense full of intrigue, Shelley is sure to please!

In her newest novel, Her Secret, Hannah is struggling with some major trust issues. And who can blame her? After getting some disturbing photos in the mail, Hannah is sure she knows who is behind it all. What exactly does this stalker know? What secrets are Hannah hiding? And can her longtime friend and potential love interest Isaac accept her as she is?

Of Stillness and Storm

“I felt torn between two worlds. Each with its own mystery. One more captivating than the other, but the other more real and breathing.”It took Lauren and her husband ten years to achieve their dream—reaching primitive tribes in remote regions of Nepal. But while Sam treks into the Himalayas for weeks at a time, finding passion and purpose in his work among the needy, Lauren and Ryan stay behind, their daily reality more taxing than inspiring. For them, what started as a calling begins to feel like the family’s undoing.

At the peak of her isolation and disillusion, a friend from Lauren’s past enters her life again. But as her communication with Aidan intensifies, so does the tension of coping with the present while reengaging with the past. It’s thirteen-year-old Ryan who most keenly bears the brunt of her distraction.

Intimate and bold, Of Stillness and Storm weaves profound dilemmas into a tale of troubled love and honorable intentions gone awry.
MY THOUGHTS:

The synopsis first intrigued me when I decided to request a copy of this book for my blog. The more I read, the more I couldn’t stop reading. There’s just something about the unraveling of lives in fiction that captures our attention and holds it. As I learned more about the characters and began to see the story unfold, it saddened me. It reminded me of people I know and stories I’ve heard. There was a realness and a rawness to this story. It was easy to see the red flags and mistakes Lauren was making as she stumbled off the right path and it reminded me of how hard it is to see those flags in my own life. This book would make a great book club selection. It will have you thinking about the characters long after the story has ended.

MY REVIEW:

I absolutely love this sweet romance from Carol Ross! She has done a fabulous job crafting characters who are unforgettable…they will stay with you long after you have turned the final page. This “knight” and his “mermaid” have a chemistry that simply works and will keep readers engrossed in their love story until the end. Elements of suspense add an intriguing aspect to this story as well. If you are looking for a Christmas love story with an edge…don’t miss Christmas In The Cove.

Carol Ross lives with her husband and one loveable miscreant of a dachshund in a small town in Washington close to both the ocean and the mountains. She adores the Pacific Northwest because it provides her with endless opportunities for the activities she loves—hiking, running, skiing, and spending time outdoors. Although she enjoys reading in many genres, she writes what she loves the most—romance, especially light-hearted stories about the fun, flirty, and often-tumultuous path toward a happily ever after.

When Death Draws Near

Death has always been part of Gwen Marcey’s job. But when faced with her own mortality, everything takes on a different hue.

Forensic artist Gwen Marcey is between jobs and homes when she accepts temporary work in Pikeville, Kentucky. The Eastern Kentucky town, located deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, has been plagued by a serial rapist and a series of unexplained deaths. Before Gwen can develop a composite drawing, the latest witness vanishes, just like all the previous victims.

Turning her attention to sketching the face of an unidentified body, she discovers a link between his death and a Pentecostal serpent-handling church. Serpent-handling is illegal in Kentucky, and the churches have gone underground to avoid the authorities and continue to worship as they believe. Gwen is offered a handsome reward to infiltrate the renegade members, a reward she desperately needs as it seems her breast cancer has returned.

Joined by her digitally-obsessed, Generation Z daughter, Gwen goes undercover to a nineteenth century revival, planning to draw the faces of the snake handlers so they can be identified and arrested. Instead she uncovers a murderous plot and a festering evil.
