One choice could destroy them all. When eighteen-year-old Levi returned from Denver City with his latest scavenged finds, he never imagined he’d find his village of Glenrock decimated, loved ones killed, and many—including his fiancee, Jem—taken captive. Now alone, Levi is determined to rescue what remains of his people, even if it means entering the Safe Lands, a walled city that seems anything but safe. Omar knows he betrayed his brother by sending him away, but helping the enforcers was necessary. Living off the land and clinging to an outdated religion holds his village back. The Safe Lands has protected people since the plague decimated the world generations ago … and its rulers have promised power and wealth beyond Omar’s dreams. Meanwhile, their brother Mason has been granted a position inside the Safe Lands, and may be able to use his captivity to save not only the people of his village, but also possibly find a cure for the virus that threatens everyone within the Safe Lands’ walls. Will Mason uncover the truth hidden behind the Safe Lands’ facade before it’s too late?

MY REVIEW…
When I first heard that Jill Williamson was writing a new dystopian series, I could not wait to get my hands on a copy! If you are a fan of dystopian (The Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins, Divergent- Veronica Roth, Matched- Ally Condie) DO NOT MISS “CAPTIVES”!!!!
Author Jill Williamson said that the inspiration for CAPTIVES struck her during a Beth Moore Bible Study (Daniel) and I can totally see how this book has “whispers” of the biblical account of Daniel during his time under Nebuchadnezzar’s reign.
One of the three brothers in the book, Mason, reminded me a lot of Daniel (even down to his vegetarian-ism). I thought a lot about Mason and the hard decisions he had to make after he was forced from his home and way of life into a whole new world (the Safe Lands) and I wondered what I would have done if I were put in his situation…as I have often wondered about Daniel.
It’s easy to look at characters like Omar (who basically betrays his entire community to the Enforcers) and say how selfish and despicable they are, but we are all capable of doing things like this or worse.
How ironic that The Safe Lands are named so, when this place is ANYTHING BUT SAFE. The world Jill has created literally creeps me out! The plague has taken over, females are forced to bear children for the “government” to raise, families are torn a part, people are considered not worthy of life once they turn 40?!?
There were so many things I loved about this book…I can’t wait for book 2!!!
*****5/5 STARS***** A MUST-READ!!!

  1. I liked the character of Mason. He seemed the most level-headed of the three brothers. There was even a hint of romance between Mason and his boss, so he has an added incentive to find a cure when the Safe Lands scientists couldn’t.
